Usnea spp., or "old man's beard," is a species of lichen that has numerous medical and health applications. In traditional medicine, Usnea was used to treat wounds and stop bleeding, as an antiseptic, and to treat respiratory problems such as coughs, bronchitis, and even tuberculosis. It was also used to treat skin problems, such as eczema, as well as to treat infection. Modern research has shown that Usnea has antimicrobial, antiviral, and immunomodulating properties, and therefore has potential to be used in the treatment of various infections and conditions. Recent studies have also revealed potential uses for Usnea in cancer treatment, as well as to regulate inflammation in the body. Just like it's distant relative the lungwort lichen, Usnea is a must have for the herbal medicine cabinet!
