Ghost Pipe

Ghost pipe, also known as Indian pipe or Monotropa uniflora, is a unique plant found in our forests in North America. It is often mistaken for a mushroom, due to its lack of chlorophyll and its white, pale pink, or sometimes reddish coloration. Unlike most plants, ghost pipe does not photosynthesize; instead, it obtains its nutrients from mycorrhizal fungi that are associated with tree roots. These fungi form a symbiotic relationship with the trees, and ghost pipe taps into this relationship to obtain its nutrients indirectly. Because of this, it is impossible to transplant ghost pipe and we rely exclusively on natural growth.

Ghost pipe was used medicinally by Indigenous Peoples and is known for its ability to treat physical and emotional pain. It is a sedative and helps control anxiety, panic attacks and insomnia. It is useful in treating muscle spasms, nervousness, agitation, migraines, fevers and infections. It also has anticonvulsant properties and has been used to treat seizures and epilepsy. It can also be used as a calming agent to help people overwhelmed by drug experiences such as those caused by LSD or hallucinogenic mushrooms.
